Assam Wage Compensation Scheme

Assam is a state of leading producer of tea. But to lead in tea production the people their work day and night and all the months throughout the year. But this is also the reason that statistics of this state shows the worse side of this hard work that they do. One of the tea producing belt of upper Assam, including places like Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia are some of those areas which shows the worst Maternal Mortality Rates.

But here is the Assam government, which decided to change this statistic and improve the health of pregnant women in the state. For this, the government decided to launch the scheme which has the aim of providing better health conditions and nutritional intakes to the pregnant women, in the state. The scheme launched is Assam Wage Compensation Scheme. For the financial year 2018-19, in the state health budget amount of around INR 55 crore has been allotted.

Launch of Scheme

This scheme got launched in Guwahati in some function at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, in presence of Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Where in Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal said, “this is a historic initiative of the state government which will be able to considerably bring down the mortality rate among the pregnant women of the tea community of the state. Assam’s identity is synonymous with its tea gardens but the large working laborer population in the tea gardens have not been given access to quality healthcare.”

So is the scheme that it will help pregnant women in Assam improve their health. Without compromising much on the livelihood of their family. This scheme is about to help around 60,000 women working in tea gardens in Assam during pregnancy.

Benefits of Assam Wage Compensation Scheme

Benefits under this scheme that a pregnant woman as an individual will get is financial in nature directly. That is each pregnant woman will get amount worth INR 12,000 during their pregnancy. This amount will be credited to them in 4 installments as follows:

  • The first installment will be of INR 2,000 within the first trimester. And most likely it will be credited during the Ante- Natal Check-up (ANC) registration.
  • The second installment will be of INR 4,000 during the 6th month of the pregnancy.
  • INR 3,000 will be credited as the 3rd installment during delivery at any government-approved health institution or hospital.
  • The last or 4th installment will be credited in the 6th week after delivery worth INR 3,000.

But the other benefits of this scheme are that this will lower down the high Maternal Mortality Rate. And Neonatal mortality rate, that is prevalent in the women working in tea gardens. This is mostly because women have to work in tea gardens even when they are pregnant. But under this scheme, women will also be relaxed from working in tea gardens. She will be relax from the First trimester till 3 months post-delivery.

Also, these women will not be working in the tea gardens from the third trimester to 3 months after delivery.
